When we shipped our first 200 candles in 2024, every order left the studio wrapped in plastic bubble film. Today, every mismohola order goes out in 100% recycled, recyclable, and home-compostable materials. Here’s how we got there — and what we learned the hard way.

The problem with “eco” packaging

The market is full of greenwashing. “Biodegradable” plastic that needs an industrial composter that doesn’t exist in your city. “Recyclable” mailers that get rejected at the local sorting facility. We made several of these mistakes ourselves.

What we changed

  • Boxes: FSC-certified, 100% recycled kraft cardboard. Printed with soy-based ink.
  • Inner wrap: Honeycomb paper instead of bubble film — fully curbside-recyclable.
  • Tape: Water-activated paper tape. Looks beautiful, recycles with the box.
  • Tissue: Acid-free, FSC-certified, printed with food-safe inks.
  • Filler: Wood wool from a local Berlin sawmill. Smells incredible.

What it cost

Honestly? About 14% more per shipment. We absorbed most of it instead of passing it to you, because we’d rather earn your loyalty than your refund.

What’s next

We’re piloting a take-back program in 2026: any mismohola box, returned to us with a prepaid label, earns you a 10% credit and gets reused for studio archives. Small steps, but real ones.
